Robert Lang, 88

September 12, 1934 - September 22, 2022

Robert "Bob" Lang of Skillman died on Thursday, September 22 in Somerville after a three- year battle with cancer. He was 88.

Bob was born on September 12, 1934 at St. Joseph's hospital in Paterson. His parents, Helen and Harry, were living in Hawthorne at the time. Bob was the first of six kids. His father was ill a lot of the time and life was not always easy for the Lang family, but Bob talked often of his wonderful childhood and the close-knit community he lived in as he grew up.

As a young teen he moved to Paterson, where he met Shirley Bulmer. They dated through high school and married at the age of 19 on May 1, 1954. Shirley and Bob began their life together in Paterson where babies Sharon and Eileen were born. They moved to Wayne where Kathy was born.

As a young man, Bob was a camp counselor, sang in a barber shop quartet, and played the trombone (in addition to several other instruments). Inspired by the space program, Bob developed a deep interest in space and earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master's degree in management science. He had a long career in the field he loved at Singer Kearfott (NJ), Singer Telesignal (Long Island) and Singer Librascope (CA). After “retirement” he worked at Battelle (MD) and took pride in helping to develop defense technologies after 9/11.

Bob had many interests, including science, crafts and sports; but one of his main loves was baseball. Watching the Yankees on TV and going to the Somerset Patriots games as a season pass holder was something he always looked forward to. Bob was also an avid reader and especially enjoyed all Sherlock Holmes and books by Agatha Christie.

Bob will be greatly missed by all who loved him, including his three children Sharon Brennan, Eileen Pounds, and Kathy Lang (Darold), his five grandchildren (Bob Brennan, Ryan Brennan, Katie Stehman, Taylor Lang and Tyler Lang) and his four great grandchildren (Connor Brennan, Riley Brennan, Brayden Stehman, and Hailey Stehman).

Bob’s family includes his sisters Carol Lang (Mike) and Diana Mandara (John), Brother Ken Lang (Meris) and Sisters-in-law Dee Lang and Rita Lang. Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley, brothers John and Don, and sons-in-law John Brennan and Stan Pounds.

A funeral service was held on October 1 and burial followed at Highland Cemetery, Hopewell. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital and AutismRadio.org.
