By Barbara A. Preston | Posted October 10, 2024

Municipal court statistics show that police have issued 48% more traffic tickets in Rocky Hill Borough in the 2024 fiscal year (July 2023 - June 2024) than in the previous fiscal year.

A traffic violation includes: speeding, tailgating, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving with an expired or suspended license, or driving under the influence (DUI).

Rocky Hill has “Traffic Calmed” areas, and most roads are lined with family homes. The speed limit is 30 mph on Route 518 (Washington Street).

There were 309 moving violations in from July 2022 to June 2023 versus 456 violations from July 2023 to June 2024. County Route 518, (known as Washington Street in the borough) is the busiest road in Rocky Hill, with one of the few bridges to cross the Millstone River and D&R Canal towpath.

Borough Councilman Richard Novak told The Montgomery News that there is increase in speed enforcement. The tiny borough has hired Franklin Township police, and has the NJ State police both enforcing the traffic laws.

“I am extremely pleased to see the dramatic increase in speed enforcement numbers,” Novak said.

“This is part of our borough’s dedicated and integrated approach to traffic calming and increasing pedestrian safety. It is a direct response to the appeal to the mayor and council by our residents.”

Novak added that Rocky Hill has lowered the speed limit on Princeton Avenue to 25 mph, and there will likely be speed limit reduction from 30 mph to 25 mph along the downtown section of Washington Street.

“We have applied for grants to significantly increase pedestrian crossing flashing beacons throughout the borough along with driver feedback radar signs. This integrated approach is the only way that we will be able to achieve noticeable and long-lasting improvements in calming and safety,” Novak said.

“We are committed to these efforts and will continue to pursue them vigorously.”
