New Business in Town: Free Living Yoga Now Open

By Arshia Mathur | January 2, 2022

Free Living Yoga (FLY), founded by Montgomery High School graduate Lindsay (Pugliese) Whitford, is a fresh, new boutique studio now open at The Village Shoppes at Montgomery.

FLY specializes in yoga, heated infrared yoga, barre, Pilates, and meditation. Whitford says it is the only studio in the area to offer all of these practices within a single space.

Whitford grew up in Belle Mead, and she is the daughter of Vincent J. Pugliese, the chairman and CEO of Pugliese Properties.

She says she takes pride in being able to share her practice with the community through her newly constructed studio.

Whitford is a 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) — is a distinction given to yoga teachers whose training and teaching experience meet Yoga Alliance requirements.

RYTs must complete training with a registered yoga school, be confirmed by Yoga Alliance, and be current with annual fees, and continuing education requirements.

Whitford is also a certified Level 1 Reiki and meditation instructor. The word “Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.” It comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” meaning life energy. It is an energy healing technique.

Whitford also guides her students through Barre — a rigorous workout that blends elements from different exercise styles including ballet, Pilates, and yoga. Barre is named for the primary piece of equipment: the bar.

After graduating college, Whitford spent years in the fast-paced fashion industry before ultimately deciding a change was needed. This led her to embark on a career and lifestyle change through yoga and fitness.

Whitford’s purpose for opening Free Living Yoga was to support people through movement, but her greater purpose was to help bring our community back together. She wanted to rebuild what was lost during the pandemic, and to make it better. As the creator and owner, she said she loves spending every day guiding those in the community to feel their best and become the greatest version of themselves.

“FLY prides itself on being a safe and relatable space for all individuals seeking movement and healing,” she said.

“We encourage our students to take time for themselves both on and off the mat. We believe that everyone can FLY.”

A grand opening is scheduled for March. ■
