Montgomery Township Resident Charged with Patricide

By Barbara A. Preston | August 25, 2022

Matawan police arrested a man in the Belle Mead section of Montgomery Township on August 19 and charged him with murdering his father.

Kenneth Knapp, Jr., 31, is facing life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder and second-degree desecration of human remains in the connection with the death of Kenneth Knapp, Sr., 58. The crime happened on May 1 in Matawan, where Knapp shared a home with his father.

Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Mark Spivey told The Montgomery News that, “Homicide suspects are arrested wherever they happen to be.”

“Our office received information that the defendant had recently taken up temporary residence in Belle Mead, and he was arrested at his residence last Friday [August 19].”

The prosecutor’s office could not say who provided the tip that led to the arrest at Knapp Jr.’s Belle Mead residence. The did say that the arrest occurred without incident.

The murder took place at a home on the 200 block of Matawan Avenue, in Matawan. Police officers had responded to a request for a welfare check, when they found the body of Kenneth Knapp Sr. in the basement on May 1. Both the cause and manner of death were initially listed as pending following an autopsy, but the finalized autopsy report issued last month revealed that the cause of death was blunt-force trauma, with the manner of death being homicide.
