Third COVID-19 Death in Monty Twp / State, County, & Township Parks to Reopen on Saturday

Montgomery Township reported its third COVID-19-related death on Thursday, April 30. One of the deceased was a resident of Stonebridge of Montgomery, according to the township's public relations officer, Tamara D. Garaffa.

In other local coronavirus news, officials will announce the reopening of Somerset County parks and golf courses, according to Somerset County Parks press contact Rich Reitman. The county parks and golf courses will reopen on Saturday, May 2, at sunrise. The county is following the lead of Gov Phil Murphy, who signed an executive order to reopen New Jersey’s state parks; and to allow golf courses and county parks to reopen. Montgomery Township open its local parks as well.

The reopening of the county parks will have restrictions, Reitman said. "We are working on the press release now," he said. "There will be parking lot restrictions and face masks will likely be required, along with social distancing."

Somerset County overall reported 3,099 positive cases of coronavirus and 267 deaths as of April 30. For more information, visit the Somerset County Coronavirus Information Hub.

Montgomery Township had 87 positive cases. Rocky Hill still has five positive cases, according to the Somerset County Coronavirus Information Hub. Rocky Hill had six positive cases. No information was provided on whether the one person in Rocky Hill got better, or if it was a mistake.

LOCAL PARKS TO REOPEN SATURDAY

Montgomery Township public parks will reopen along with the state parks at sunrise on Saturday, May 2. (In the Montgomery / Rocky Hill area, the Delaware & Raritan Canal Park is a state park.)

Physical distancing requirements remain in effect throughout the parks. The continued availability of park access is predicated on the adherence to safety and health guidelines. No social gatherings or sports will be permitted.

Playground equipment will remain closed to prevent children from congregating in close proximity. Masks must be worm. Also, maintain at least six feet from others, except among those living in the same household.

Montgomery Police will patrol the parks to ensure social distancing rules are observed. Remember to treat community members with respect and consideration. If you are concerned about something you see in the parks or elsewhere, call the police department.

Somerset County Parks include Skillman Park, which is across the street from Montgomery High School, and the 4,000-acre Sourland Mountain Preserve.
