The New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute announced on March 6 that Montgomery Township is one of 32 healthiest towns in New Jersey — going above and beyond to improve health and wellness through innovative programs in areas such as exercise, healthy eating, and mental health education and awareness.

The Quality Institute, in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities, administers a program called the Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC).

“New Jersey’s community leaders aren’t just talking about health and wellness; they’re making it,” said Mike Cerra, executive director of the New Jersey League of Municipalities. “From small towns to big cities, these leaders are showing up for their residents and building healthier, more vibrant communities.”

Mayor Neena Singh oversees the MWC program in Montgomery Township. MWC is a statewide community health initiative instituted in 2006 that provides evidence-based tools and strategies for mayors and community leaders to help their residents achieve healthier lifestyles and to improve overall health and wellness in their communities. The campaign includes over 400 participating communities.

Montgomery Township, a 2024 Healthy Town

Montgomery Township achieved its Healthy Town Award on March 6.

Partnership with the Montgomery-Rocky Hill Municipal Alliance has helped the township focus on important substance-use prevention programs in addition to vaccine clinics, wellness walks, and health education activities. Collaborative efforts from the parks and recreation department and the health department have strengthened Montgomery as a community by engaging our residents in wellness- focused activities throughout the year, according to the NJ Care Quality Institute.

Mayor Neena Singh said in a prepared statement: “We are so proud that Montgomery Township has earned the distinguished Healthy Town designation for 2024, after becoming a Healthy Town to Watch in 2023. The MWC has helped us to study our town’s needs, then start up or improve initiatives to support our community’s physical, mental, social, and emotional wellness.

"We have taken positive actions to strengthen Montgomery as a community by engaging our residents in wellness-focused activities throughout the year. Providing our residents with the services they need is what good government is all about. We are looking forward to continuing work with our community partners to help our residents live healthier lives.”
