The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency announced in a press release the arrest of Ming Xi Zhang, a Chinese national and Montgomery Township resident known by locals as "Sushi John." ICE Newark arrested Zhang on March 24 in Newark, NJ. He remains in ICE custody.

Zhang owns and operates YaYa Noodles in the Montgomery Shopping Center.

ICE reports that Zhang lawfully entered the United States in June 2000 at the Los Angeles International Airport, then later violated the terms of his lawful admission.

The U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey had convicted Zhang for illegally acting as "an agent of a foreign government" without notification to the US Attorney General, and sentenced him on April 30, 2024 to probation for a term of three years — according to the ICE press release.

ICE did not explain why Zhang was taken into custody on March 24. The Montgomery News reached out to the Newark ICE office, but ICE did not respond as of March 28. More details will be provided as this story develops.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris said in the press release that, “Any illegal alien conducting activities related to espionage, sabotage, or export control against the United States is subject to deportation."

However, ICE did not allege or directly charge Zhang with any of these specific activities.
