For the past 25 years, Art Villano has been the driving force behind Montgomery Township’s public work initiatives. On August 1, he retired. During his 21-year tenure as the superintendent of Public Works, Villano led projects ranging from building maintenance to road clearance and repairs, ensuring a continuation of everyday routines amidst disruptions.

A long-time resident and high school graduate of Hillsborough High School, Villano’s career began not too far from Montgomery. His father worked in the public works department in Hillsborough, influencing Villano’s career path.

“My father was the director of Public Works at Hillsborough for 30 some years,” Villano said. “After working there [myself], a foreman position opened up in Montgomery. I applied and got the position.”

Villano pursued snow plow education and winter maintenance education at Wisconsin University, followed by several certifications through Rutgers University. Mayor Neena Singh praised Villano’s strong work ethic and dedication.

“When I first talked to him, he said, ‘whenever I’m needed, Mayor, doesn’t matter if it’s during my work hours, I’m there.’ That kind of dedication does not come easy.” Singh said.

Though Villano’s life and career have been spent in the Montgomery and Hillsborough area, he plans to move out of state following his retirement. All three of his children will be in Tennessee.

His youngest son graduated high school this year and committed to playing lacrosse at a university in Tennessee. So, Villano and his family plan on moving down south with him, where he will be able to attend his lacrosse games and spend more time with his family.
