New Pedestrian Crossing to Open Soon

The NJ Department of Transportation began work on the final phase of pedestrian improvements at Route 206 and Orchard Road with upgrades to the traffic signal, and imminent start of final sidewalk sections and ramps so pedestrians can safely cross. Other exciting pedestrian projects include the upcoming extension of sidewalk on Montgomery Road (with State road paving funds) from Sycamore to the Stonebridge development and to the open space trailhead. This is one of my favorite open spaces to visit, especially in April when the native blue bells carpet the woodlands along the Bedens Brook. These meandering paths along the Bedens Brook and Millstone River offer a quiet and reflective experience and are worth checking out.

Tree Removal Permit Process

The state-mandated tree removal permit process is underway. Montgomery residents are using the online form to ensure the town remains in compliance. We thank all residents and businesses for their participation prior to removing any trees. The state expects that this new requirement will ensure that trees continue to help filter air pollution, sequester carbon, and retain stormwater. Some of the exemptions include trees that interfere with a septic system; dead or diseased; within 50 feet of a home; and invasive species. The Callery pear tree is one of the most prolific invaders that spreads wildly and is most noticeable in spring with showy white blooms.

An ever-multiplying area of invasive Callery, also known as Bradford pear, blooming in spring.

Please Don't Plant

Pyrus calleryana, also known as the Callery pear or Bradford pear, is native to China and Vietnam. Known for its offensive odor and rapid propagation, it once was a favorite of landscapers and municipal planners for its pretty spring flowers. It has become an ecological nightmare. The seeds sicken local birds, and the trees suffocate native plants and trees. Widely planted throughout the United States, it is a highly invasive species. Some states have banned the tree, including Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Ohio.

Montgomery Promenade Construction Update

Milestones have been met for site preparation and infrastructure that will serve the future shopping center, including completion of the stormwater basin and drainage systems, and significant progress made on underground utilities, including sanitary sewer, water and electric. Work is underway along Route 206, and soon will include two loop roads to alleviate traffic at the 206/518 intersection.

Farm Market on Saturdays

The Montgomery Farmers Market is taking advantage of the additional space at the municipal center parking area with an expanded list of vendors, offerings, and entertainment. Stop by on Saturdays between 10 am and 1 pm for fresh seasonal offerings and locally-prepared food. The market is located at 100 Community Drive right off Orchard Road.
