The home by Pike Brook was unfortunately flooded and damaged by Hurricane Ida in September 2021. The same storm also flooded and damaged the Washington Well Farm, circa 1770, in Skillman. [For Sale: Pre-Revolution-Era Dutch Farmhouse] Flood Insurance is required for both properties. And both are for sale.

It remains to be seen whether a private buyer, or buyers, will be able to restore these properties. Or, will grants become available to save the buildings? Much of the original grist mill equipment is still present in the dining room and upstairs bedroom of Opie’s Mill. It comes with a charming old barn with a large loft area that has been used as a 3-car garage.

The views and tranquility are still present even though the property was damaged during Ida. All utilities need to be replaced or reattached if still usable. The real estate listing warns potential buyers to “please be sure to do your own due diligence. This property is being sold ‘as is.’” Still, there is potential, according to the listing agent.

Montgomery Township officials have used the grist mill image on its official logo for many years. Currently, a photo of the mill appears on the banner of the township’s municipal website. What can town’s do to preserve these charming historic buildings?
