Filing Deadline to Run for Monty School Board Is Monday, July 27

The Montgomery Township School Board has four seats up for grabs.

Montgomery and Rocky Hill residents who are interested in running for the board must file a petition with the Somerset County Clerk by 4 pm on Monday, July 27 in order for the candidate's name to appear on the ballot during the November 3 general election.

There are nine seats on the Montgomery School District School Board. The seats of the following four members will expire this year: Christina Harris; Amy Miller; Ranjana Rao; and Biren Saraiya. It is unknown whether these members will apply to be candidates in the November 3 general elections.

A full term on the school board runs for three years.

Candidates must obtain a minimum of 10 signatures (NJSA 19:60-7). The state of New Jersey is allowing electronic signatures and electronic filing of petitions because of the pandemic.

Candidates can download the petition and email it to their signers, who can print, sign, and scan the document to return to the candidate. The candidate can bundle all documents, along with the notarized back of the petition. Email it to countyclerk@co.somerset.nj.us, fax it to 908-575-3930, or drop it off at 20 Grove Street, Somerville NJ 08876 by 4 pm on July 27.

Call the Somerset County Election Board at 908-231-7013 for more information.

In addition: Candidate Kits are available on the NJ School Board Association Website.

“One of the most meaningful contributions that citizens can make to their community is serving on the local board of education,” said Michael McClure, NJSBA president. “I encourage all interested citizens to consider school board membership. It doesn’t require a degree in education, or a background in politics. However, it does require a sincere interest in the community, its children, and their education.”
