Belle Mead Resident Named New Head Football Coach at Montgomery High School

By Barbara A. Preston | Posted March 20, 2025

Longtime Assistant Coach Sean Carty is the new Montgomery High School head football coach. He replaces the only football coach MHS has ever known — the infamous Zoran Milich.

"We just told the players yesterday," MHS Athletic Director Kris Grundy said. "They were pumped."

While Milich will be a hard act to follow, he had been grooming Carty for the job.

"I am thankful and appreciative to be named head coach," Carty told The Montgomery News. "Coach Milich has let me be involved, and helped me along the way. I am also grateful to the Montgomery football community, and to my wife, Rae Ann, who is very involved our athletic lives."

Carty, 45, hails from a coaching family that has "had its fingerprints throughout Somerset County football for decades," according to Sports Illustrated (SI). Yes, this announcement has gone national!

"Montgomery High School dipped into Somerset County football royalty by officially naming Carty as its new head coach, as the Somerville High School graduate and former Rutgers wide receiver succeeds Milich, who resigned in January after starting the program 25 years ago," according to SI.

Carty has served as Montgomery’s offensive coordinator the last several years. He also coaches the boys track and field team (a position he has held for nine years).

Carty played for Rutgers from 1999 to 2002. He is now a special education history teacher at MHS. He lives in Belle Mead with his wife, Rae Ann, and three sons Rex, grade 8; Cash, grade 6, and Cruz, grade 4.

Last year, Carty started Montgomery Youth Tackle Football (MYTF). It is part of his plan to build the local football program, beginning with the youngsters. Registration begins April 1.

"I am the president, owner, commissioner, and coach," he joked.

Montgomery Youth Tackle Football will play in the Pop Warner Little Scholars Football organization as a member of the Central Jersey Pop Warner League. Under Pop Warner’s governance, member programs are not permitted to hold tryouts. Teams are also not allowed to cut any players who has expressed a desire to participate. In addition, Pop Warner has a mandatory play requirement to encourage all kids to participate in competition.

Carty's father, Kevin Carty, Sr. is a hall of fame football coach. "He coached me and my brothers at Somerville High School," he said. His brother Kevin, Jr, is the Hillsborough head football coach, and brother Ryan is head football coach at the University of Delaware.

Coach Milich Statement

Coach Milich, the founder of the school’s football program, will continue as a teacher at MHS. He teaches, Crime & Punishment, Intro to Sociology, and Elements of Human Behavior.

He released this statement prior to the public announcement.

Sean Carty is the perfect choice to lead the Montgomery High School football program. He is totally prepared for this opportunity after putting in many years mastering all three phases of the game — as an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special teams coach.

On top of that, he’s deeply committed to building the future of the program, having just launched the tackle youth football program this past season and consistently running a variety of youth football initiatives. His passion, leadership, and dedication to developing young athletes is unmatched. I have no doubt he will elevate the program to new heights while continuing to build a culture of excellence, integrity, and heart. Montgomery football is in great hands. This is a home run hire! — Zoran Milich
