A Belle Mead resident lost $6,000 in a PayPal scam, according to Montgomery Township police. The resident reported the scam on April 9.

A cyberspace con artist posed as a security agent from PayPal in an email to the victim. The scammer then alleged that "someone was trying to purchase an iPhone using the victim’s PayPal account."

The victim called the phone number listed in the email and spoke to an individual who convinced the victim to assist in "catching the individual trying to purchase the iPhone."

The victim ended up purchasing two gift cards, and completed a Bitcoin transaction.

Montgomery police said the victim only became suspicious after the transactions were completed.

At that point, the victim reached out to PayPal, and a company representative told the victim that PayPal never sent the email to the victim.

Double check emails from PayPal at the company security website.
