Montgomery & Hillsborough Residents Urged to Conserve Water

Emergency Repair Requires Conservation of Public Water.

An important message from New Jersey American Water

Due to an emergency water main repair at the Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant, New Jersey American Water is urging customers in Montgomery and Hillsborough (as well as several other Somerset County towns served by the water company) to refrain from outdoor water use and conserve water inside their homes until the further notice.

Customers in these areas may experience low pressure or discoloration and/or cloudy water while repairs are being made. The company estimates the repair will be finished by Sept 8, after which time, customers will be notified that they can return to usual usage.

The Montgomery Township Health Department has set up a Water Station at Van Horne Park for residents who may have no water at all through Sept 8. A hose of potable water has been set up at Van Horne Park Picnic Pavillion (off Benjamin Boulevard) where residents can fill their own jugs for drinking water.

Plans to repair the main began Sept 4 when a small leak was found on the transmission valve. During repairs, New Jersey American Water will need to take the transmission main out of service.

“We are asking customers to conserve water during our repair process so that we can continue to maintain adequate water flows for basic household needs and fire service,” says Robert Schaefer, senior director of Operations for New Jersey American Water’s central operating region. “We will work swiftly and safely to make the needed repairs and we thank our customers for their cooperation.”
